New director for Affinity Events

Ben Warlow

Ben Warlow was appointed to Affinity’s board of directors this month.

Ben has become our Director of Operations. He will be working alongside existing directors Alan & Liz Wallace.

After starting with Affinity as an Event Manager in 2004, Ben quickly became an invaluable part of the team. Many of you will have worked with him on your events and projects. During the past three years he has gained a wide range of experience and become proficient in all areas of Affinity’s portfolio.

As a director, Ben will retain the majority of his account management and event responsibilities. He will also take an overview of the staffing and operation of all Affinity’s event and delegate registration work.

We are excited about the new opportunities this appointment will create for Affinity Events.

Tupacproject UK Launch

2pac_stature.jpg

When Limehouse Arts Foundation organised the UK exhibition of Paolo Chiasera’s Tupacproject Affinity Events were the natural choice for technical support.  Working to tight timescales and in a challenging environment; we provided technical support including outdoor display and architectural lighting for this Art Project.  During this project we worked with the curator to ensure that things were done in harmony with the purpose of the work.

Cardiff University International Conference

Despite taking over Cardiff City Centre for Christian Aid, we were also working in another venue on the same day – this time continuing our close relationship with Cardiff University. Our conference team have been working for over a year on the preparations for this international conference which took place at Cardiff City Hall and the Museum of Cardiff.

The four day event for 450 delegates, saw Affinity manage all aspects of the event – from delegate management and online bookings to dealing with the production of delegate badging, technical production and onsite management. We also helped to floor manage the conference dinner which took place one evening during the event.

Christian Aid – Cut the Carbon Cardiff

christian_aid_cdf2.jpg

Our final event of the tour for Christian Aid has taken place this weekend in Cardiff.  Our full team was out to support the ‘home’ event for us – and as well as this event we were also setting up for a conference for Cardiff University at the same time, just half a mile away.

We again successfully built the event, held the show and took everything away within about 14 hours – a true testament to our event management team, suppliers and client, Christian Aid.

We were proud to be involved in such a worthwhile project and pleased to work once again with Christian Aid

Christian Aid – Cut the Carbon Birmingham

Following quickly on the heels of the Leeds event, we once again find ourselves with a one day build-show-derig event for Christian Aid.

This time the event has taken place in Birmingham – and despite a last minute change of venue all went to plan. The special guest at this event was pop-star Lemar who entertained the crowds.

Christian Aid ‘Cut the Carbon’ Event – Leeds

Following on from the Edinburgh event, Affinity have once again been supporting Christian Aid – this time at their event in Leeds.  The weather held for us and everyone had an excellent day.

We worked closely with the police, ambulance and licensing authorities to allow us to close the roads through the centre of the city, as well as with the events team from Leeds City Council who own and manage Victoria Gardens where the event took place.

Again, we didn’t know how many people would attend the event so worked closely with the authorities and the client to ensure that our planning covered us for all eventualities.  The event was second in the series of four events which are taking place around the UK.  The events are in quick succession and fall at one of the busiest periods in Affinity’s history.  Despite this our team have pulled together and organised yet another successful event.

Wet weather forces change of plan

The wet weather has continued to play havoc with the summer events season, and although we were very lucky with the weather at Walsingham (where we didn’t suffer a single spot of rain all week!) we have been forced at the last minute to move the Birmingham leg of the Christian Aid event from Cannon Hill Park to the Birmingham IMAX centre.

The change is due to the damage to the ground which has been inflicted by another event organiser and in an effort to give the ground chance to recover, we have moved the event at the request of Birmingham City Council.

The change of venue (with just two weeks to go) has meant new risk assessments, production schedules and site plans have been drawn up – not to mention the last minute re-planning of the ‘Cut the Carbon’ March which will result in road closures in the centre of Birmingham.

Lets hope the rain holds off for the rest of these events in Leeds, Birmingham and Cardiff.
